Application Process

The Maryland Board for Professional Engineers participates in the U.S.–U.K. Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) and the Engineering Council of the United Kingdom.
The MRA provides a streamlined pathway for eligible U.K. Chartered Engineers (CEng) who hold International Professional Engineer (IntPE) status to apply for a Maryland Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
To apply through the MRA, applicants must:

  • Hold current CEng and IntPE status in the United Kingdom;
  • Complete the required MRA sections of the NCEES Record;
  • Have the completed NCEES Record transmitted to the Maryland Board; and
  • Complete the Maryland Professional Engineer – MRA Reciprocal License Application and pay the applicable Maryland fees.

Applicants who qualify under the MRA are exempt from the NCEES FE and PE examination requirements. Maryland-specific licensing requirements and procedures still apply.

MRA Applicant Notice

Before submitting the Maryland MRA Reciprocal Original License Application, applicants must complete the required MRA process through NCEES and have an MRA-designated NCEES Record transmitted to the Maryland Board.
Transmittal of an NCEES Record does not constitute an application for Maryland licensure. Applicants must separately complete the Maryland MRA Reciprocal Original License Application and pay the applicable Maryland fees.
