Maryland Gains 12,400 Jobs in August

Maryland was the Third Fastest Growing State in the Nation

BALTIMORE, MD (September 19, 2023) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland gained 12,400 jobs in August, the largest job growth since July 2022. The unemployment rate decreased to 1.7%. This is the seventh consecutive month of record-setting low unemployment for Maryland.

The Professional and Business Services sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 6,300 jobs.

Additional sectors that created jobs include: the Public sector (2,400); Private Education and Health Services (1,900); Mining, Logging, and Construction (1,000); Leisure and Hospitality (900); Other Services (400); and Manufacturing (300).

Sectors that experienced a decline include: Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (500) and Financial Activities (300).
