Maryland Department of Labor Calls on Employers to Promote Summer Safety in Extreme Heat with Water, Rest and Shade

BALTIMORE, MD (July 25, 2016) – Recent Maryland forecasts call for high summer temperatures which can prove hazardous to individuals working in hot and humid conditions. The Maryland Department of Labor's Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) unit is urging employers to learn the steps to protect workers from heat-related illness.

The Maryland Department of Labor is committed to safeguarding work environments by reminding employers to provide water, rest and shade to keep workers safe in extreme heat," said Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz.

The Maryland Department of Labor recommends that employers take these steps to protect workers from the onset of heat-related illness:

  • Allow frequent water breaks. It is recommended that a worker consume about a cup of cool water every 15 minutes.

  • Grant workers regular breaks to rest in cool, shaded areas.

  • Make a plan for emergencies and get help for employees displaying any signs of illness.

Questions concerning heat stress in the workplace can be referred to the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) program by calling 410-527-4447. Additional Information can be located on the OSHA website.
