State Announces Newly Approved Apprenticeship Programs

Includes Expanded Apprenticeship Maryland Pilot Program Employers and Registered Apprenticeship Sponsors

BALTIMORE, MD (July 13, 2017) – Today, the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) announced the approval of three new Registered Apprenticeship sponsors, three new Eligible Employers for the Apprenticeship Maryland youth apprenticeship pilot, and the reactivation of previous sponsors. These newly approved programs provide even more options for Maryland workers preparing for careers, and provide opportunities for businesses looking to attract and invest in a pipeline of quality workers.

Nestle Dreyer’s Ice Cream Company and the Tree Care Industry Association both joined the ranks of the more than 130 active Registered Apprenticeship programs currently offered in Maryland. Nestle will now offer an apprenticeship in the trade of Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, while the Tree Care Industry Association will offer an apprenticeship in the trade of Arborist. This is the first time in the state’s history that an Arborist apprenticeship program has been approved. Delaware-based Bauguess Electrical Services, Inc. was also approved by the state.

Under Governor Larry Hogan’s leadership, the state has increased its emphasis on Registered Apprenticeship opportunities as a way for Maryland’s employers to develop training opportunities. Two previously approved employers, Brick House Brown Masonry, Inc. and the Maritime Applied Physics Corporation, sought reactivation of their standards. While previously approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council, programs were inactive as they no longer employed apprentices. DLLR provided extensive outreach and technical assistance to reinvigorate the programs.

“By growing apprenticeship programs like these, we invest in Maryland businesses that need skilled employees, as well as Maryland workers looking for good-paying jobs,” said Governor Hogan. “I am proud of the work that our administration is doing to increase and diversify apprenticeship opportunities in Maryland."

In addition, Bopat Electric Company, Inc., Dynamic Automotive, and F.B. Harding, Inc. were approved as Eligible Employers to participate in the Apprenticeship Maryland youth apprenticeship pilot currently underway in Frederick and Washington Counties. The pilot program is a partnership between the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, the Maryland State Department of Education, Frederick County Public Schools, and Washington County Public Schools. The program provides real-life employment opportunities for high school juniors and seniors. These employers join the ranks of 16 Eligible Employers that have already been approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council.
