Engineer in Training (EIT)*

The Maryland Board for Professional Engineers has instituted a new policy for Engineering in Training (EIT) candidates. This policy decision was made at the September 13, 2018 board meeting, and becomes effective October 1, 2018. The Board will now approve all candidates who apply for an EIT certificate providing (1) they have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered by the National Council of Examiners of Engineers and Surveyors; and (2) pay a certification fee set by the Board. The fee for an EIT certificate is $15.00. As set forth in the Business and Occupations Article, the only statutory requirements for obtaining Engineering in Training Certificate is the passing of the Fundamentals of Engineering examination and the payment of a certification fee set by the Board. The Board will no longer review the candidate’s education as part of the process of obtaining an EIT certificate.

*EIT is a certification, not a license. Possession of an EIT Certification grants NO privileges to practice engineering. Engineers in Training are UNLICENSED.
The issuance of an EIT certificate does not guarantee the issuance of a license to practice engineering. The requirements cited in §14–305 (b, c or d) of the Business and Occupations Article, must be met before applying to take the Principles and Practice examination. All candidates for a Professional engineer’s license must meet all required educational, experience and examination requirements.
